Correcting Improper Posture

As we age, it is common for the head to move forward and the shoulders to round, causing chronic back and neck pain.  The stride shortens and the base of support narrows, resulting in a shuffle-like gait.  The risk of falling dramatically increases and the necessity for a cane or walker is inevitable.  This posture also constricts lung function, leaving the individual short of breath and fatigued.

Fortunately, there are a number of stretches and strengthening movements that can correct improper posture.  Stretches that increase the muscles of the pectoralis and anterior deltoids along with strengthening exercises designed to increase muscle tone in the rhomboids and posterior deltoids can begin to return the posture to a better position.  Lower extremity stretches can also improve posture and decrease lower back pain.

Senior Fitness of Florida’s Fall Prevention program deliveries the above mentioned strengthening and stretching movements along with one-on-one balance exercises designed to improve posture and increase static/dynamic balance.
